A Rare Case of Recurrent Arterial Thrombosis Secondary to Iron Deficiency Anemia - Cureus

Image
Iron deficiency anemia is the leading cause of anemia all over the world. Iron deficiency is known to cause reactive thrombocytosis. However, arterial thrombosis secondary to reactive thrombocytosis is a rare entity. In this article, we present a case of a 37-year-old female with recurrent arterial thrombosis due to severe thrombocytosis caused by iron deficiency anemia. The patient developed spleen and kidney infractions, as well as abdominal aortic thrombosis. She was subsequently treated with iron and aspirin with an improvement of the anemia and thrombocytosis, with no further thrombotic complications. Arterial thrombosis is a very serious condition as the thrombus can embolize to carotid arteries leading to stroke or to peripheral blood vessels causing peripheral ischemia and gangrene. Iron deficiency anemia is a reversible cause of thrombocytosis that can be treated very easily to avoid thrombotic complications. Eliquis partners BMS, Pfizer double down on heart health with renewed 'No Time to Wait' campaign - FiercePharma

Image
Pfizer and Bristol Myers Squibb are using this month of love to try to stop hearts breaking by getting together and reigniting an old flame. The pair, which develops and sells the blockbuster blood thinner and atrial fibrillation (AF) drug Eliquis, is re-upping its 2020 "no time to wait" messaging. The thrust of the revived No Time to Wait campaign is to get people with new heart issues, such as palpitations and shortness of breath, to see their doctors. Those symptoms can stem from AF and lead to greater risks of blood clots and strokes. There's a new No Time to Wait AFib TV ad, which first aired a few weeks back, and comes with a "surround sound campaign" in radio and digital media, Bristol Myers Squibb told Fierce Pharma Marketing. The radio push includes new ads that aim to reach more Hispanic and African American patients. A new deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) commercial attached to the campaign made its debut Feb. ...

With few exceptions, it's safe and effective for most people ages 6 months and older. The ingredients of the flu vaccine change each year, depending on the flu virus strains that are expected to be circulating and getting people sick. Reading about flu shot ingredients can be confusing. This simple guide discusses each ingredient so you feel more at ease before flu season. Roberto Jimenez Mejias / Moment / Getty Images Flu Shot Ingredients The flu shot is a quadrivalent vaccine. Can You Get A Flu Shot While Breastfeeding? Here's How To Stay Healthy - Romper

Image
When flu season is gearing up, parents of nursing babies may have some specific concerns about keeping their kiddos safe. For instance, can you get a flu shot while breastfeeding, or is it a better idea to pass on the shot this year? There are many facts about flu season that breastfeeding moms should know, particularly in regard to keeping babies protected from this nasty virus. If anything, breastfeeding a baby means you have even more reason to get the flu vaccine. "The vaccine is recommended for all pregnant and breastfeeding women to decrease both their own risk of developing influenza and also protect their infant," as Jeanne S. Sheffield M.D., Johns Hopkins Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, tells Romper. "Infants cannot get the influenza vaccine until 6 months of age, so [they] rely on protection both from antibodies the mother passes to their child during the pregnancy and through the breast milk....

Avian Flu Outbreak in the US: What to Know Right Now - Healthline

Image
The United States confirmed its first case of avian flu in January after a wild South Carolina duck tested positive for the virus. Experts found the H5N1 Eurasian strain, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus type. The same strain had caused a wave of bird flu outbreaks across Europe and Asia. U.S. bird flu cases continue to rise as the H5N1 strain makes its way across the States. While current evidence suggests H5N1 to be low risk to people, experts say human transmission may cause severe symptoms. As COVID-19 cases appear to be waning in the United States, experts are cautiously watching the rise of bird flu cases in multiple states. In January, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) detected the first U.S. bird flu case after a hunted wild bird tested positive for the virus in Colleton County, South Carolina. Experts reported that it was the H5N1 strain, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) — the same strain responsible for fatal poultry outbreaks across ...

Avian flu has been detected in Indiana turkey flock, officials say - CBS News

Image
A case of highly pathogenic avian flu has been confirmed in a turkey flock in Indiana, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday. This is the first confirmed case of the virus found in U.S. commercial poultry since 2020. The USDA stressed that no cases of the virus have since been detected in humans and said there is no immediate public health concern.  The virus was detected among a commercial turkey flock in Dubois County, Indiana, the USDA said in a statement. USDA officials have since quarantined the premises, and said they "depopulated" the birds on the property.  Denise Derrer Spears, a spokeswoman for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, confirmed to CBS News that approximately 29,000 turkeys would be killed to ensure the disease does not spread.  "No human cases of these avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States," the USDA said. The department also noted that properly cooking poultry and eg...

Chylothorax found in a patient with COVID‐19 - Satriano - 2022 - Respirology Case Reports - Wiley

INTRODUCTION First reported in Wuhan, China, 1 the new coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly worldwide, causing millions of deaths and putting a lot of strain on healthcare systems. Many studies have analysed the clinical features of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which can result in a spectrum of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe respiratory failure, as well as life-threatening pneumonia and multi-organ failure. This virus penetrates the host cells via the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor, 2 which is particularly expressed in the lower respiratory tract, but can also be found in various human anatomical locations. The complexity and unpredictable course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been a tough challenge to clinicians who have often struggled to find a universally valid treatment protocol, first and foremost due to uncommon manifestations with no clear pathophy...
