Comparing gastroenteritis and colitis: What are the differences? - Medical News Today

Image
Gastroenteritis and colitis are two conditions that involve inflammation of the digestive tract. Although both can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea, they often have different causes and may require different treatment approaches. Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines that typically occurs due to a viral or bacterial infection. Diarrhea ranging from mild to severe is the most common symptom. Other symptoms people typically experience are nausea and vomiting. People can usually recover without treatment, although hydration is important in the healing process. Most cases of colitis are chronic, and risk factors can include genetics and medications. However, some cases can be acute and occur due to infections, such as Clostridioides difficile ( C. difficile) . Keep reading to learn more about the link between gastroenteritis and colitis, including how the symptoms and treatment for both conditions compare. Colitis and gastroenteritis share some similarities. For e

Can Constipation Cause Fever? Gastroenterologists Explain - Health.com

Image
The symptoms of constipation are pretty standard: having fewer than three bowel symptoms a week; stool that's hard, lumpy, or difficult to pass; feeling like you haven't passed all of your stool when you do go. All of these symptoms—though not entirely normal—are common. But what if your constipation is paired with something a little more worrisome, like a fever? Can constipation cause a fever, or is it a sign that something a bit more serious is going on? Getty Images / AdobeStock First, the good news: There's a clear, simple answer to that question—and it's that, no, constipation can't directly cause a fever, Rudolph Bedford, MD, gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA tells Health . Fever is a response to an illness or infection, according to the US National Library of Medicine (MedlinePlus). Your body is trying to kill off the bacteria or virus by creating a higher-than-normal temperature t

CDC panel recommends seniors get newer flu vaccines - Fox News

Image
NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! A federal advisory panel said Wednesday that American ages 65 and up should get newer flu vaccines.  Regular shots, they said, do not provide enough protection for the seniors, whose weakened immune systems don't respond as well to traditional shots. The shots include Fluzone High-Dose, Fluad with an immune booster or Flublok. If the newer shots aren't available, the members said seniors should get regular flu shots. ACIP Includes Fluad Quadrivalent as a Preferentially Recommended Influenza Vaccine for Adults Over 65 - Drug Topics

Image
Following a review of randomized studies and real-world data from many influenza seasons, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will include the Seqirus FluadQuadrivalent vaccine as a preferentially recommended season influenza vaccine for individuals aged 65 years and old. This recommendation is built on the clinical benefits compared to the standard egg-based influenza vaccines. If a preferentially recommended vaccine is not available at the time of administration, any age-appropriate vaccine should be used. To address the immunosenescence that may lead to a reduction in immune response to vaccines, the Fluad Quadrivalent vaccine uses the MF59 adjuvant to strengthen the immune response. More than 225 million doses have been administered since its approval in 1997, illustrating the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Gregg Sylvester, MD, Chief Health Officer at Seqirus said in a news release, "It is critical that we do everything we can to protect vuln

Areas with higher 1968 influenza pandemic mortality have lower COVID-19 deaths - News-Medical.Net

Image
A new study published on the preprint server medRxiv* demonstrates the influence of prior infectious outbreaks in a large population on succeeding pandemic outcomes. This paper demonstrates that places in the United States that suffered higher numbers of deaths in the 1968 influenza pandemic have lower rates of death from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among older people as compared to younger populations. This finding deserves detailed study to elucidate the underlying protective mechanism operating in these cases. Study: The 1968 Influenza Pandemic and COVID-19 Outcomes. Image Credit: Koy_Hipster / Shutterstock.com Background The COVID-19 pandemic led to the implementation of many different social and economic restrictions in an attempt to contain the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), as well as spurring research into vaccines to arrest the outbreak. However, many researchers are seeking to determine the best way t

A Surge of Biologics for Severe Asthma - Managed Healthcare Executive

Image
Six biologics on the market and more are in the pipeline. Biologics target the inflammatory cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that causes narrowing and inflammation of the airways that compromises breathing and, in some cases, can be fatal. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and chest pain. Nearly 25 million people in the United States have asthma, and 10 people die from the disease daily. Current asthma treatment aims to prevent exacerbations (asthma attacks) and relieve symptoms when exacerbations occur. Traditional therapies include inhaled corticosteroids, long- and short-acting beta-agonist inhalers, long- and short-acting inhaled anticholinergics, leukotriene receptor antagonists and oral corticosteroids. Most asthma cases are treatable using the currently available therapies mentioned. But about 10% of people with asthma do not respond to standard treatments and are considered to have

Exercise May Boost Immune Response to Flu Shots - Healthline

Image
Share on Pinterest Researchers say exercise can help the immune response in older adults after a flu vaccine. The Good Brigade/Getty Images In a new study, researchers say exercise before and after a flu vaccination can boost a person's immune response. They say the benefits are particularly noticeable in older adults. However, some experts caution against physical activity when you are feeling sick. A new study out of Australia and the United Kingdom reports that exercise can boost a person's immune response after they get a flu shot. However, the benefits seem to be more pronounced in those who already exercise or exercise "acutely." The benefits also appear to help older adults more than other age groups Antibody response was measured before vaccination, immediately after vaccination, and at 4 to 6 weeks after vaccination, the time for peak antibody development. Researchers examined data from six databases and two clinical registries. They identified nine studies,

Factors Affecting Parent's Practice Regarding the Management of Children's Fever - Cureus

Image
Background Fever is a common cause of doctor visits among children. Fever and its effects are a source of anxiety for parents. There is a discrepancy between parents' understanding and actual practice, which is influenced by a range of variables. This study aimed to assess the factors that influence parents' practices and home behaviors when their children had a fever. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted among 384 randomly selected Saudi parents attending primary healthcare centers of Taif city from February to April 2022. Data were collected using a pretested, self-designed questionnaire (α = 0.760) developed by the researcher through interviews. The questionnaire included questions on socio-demographic characteristics, five items to assess parents' knowledge, and 12 items to assess parents' evidence-based practices regarding childhood fever, level of worry and concerns, and difficulties encountered during management.
